Storybook pearls glow, swirl and carry dragons. Ours is a plain smooth sphere — and it is better for it.
Restraint makes the legend. The dragon pearl works in a portrait precisely because it refuses to perform. A smooth pale sphere on a dark stand catches one highlight and holds it; the viewer’s imagination supplies the legend. Carve a dragon on it and the image becomes merchandise; leave it plain and it stays a portrait.
Plainness is also the honest option. Nothing on this desk glows, floats or breathes fire. The bead is glass-smooth and still, a paperweight with a pedigree in folklore — described as such, and never dressed up as anything supernatural.
Briefing a perfect sphere. Say ‘single smooth round bead, completely plain’ and name the stand: small, dark, simple. Generators love to help by adding swirls, scales and inner clouds; every one of those additions is a rejection reason in our review, and the brief says so by omission.
Scale matters: the bead should sit smaller than the sitter’s fist. Pearls that grow to globe size drag the frame into fantasy, which is the one genre this desk never enters.
